Six Years On, Tripura’s Bru Resettlement Remains Incomplete

More than six years after a four-way agreement to permanently resettle Bru refugees in Tripura was signed in January 2020, the process remains incomplete, with state officials in June 2026 reaffirming commitments to the community’s development even as welfare implementation continues to lag original timelines.

The Bru, also known as Reang, fled ethnic violence in Mizoram in 1997; more than 40,000 took shelter in relief camps in Tripura, where many remained for over two decades. The 2020 agreement, signed by Bru leaders, the Centre, and the governments of Tripura and Mizoram, came with a ₹661-crore package for resettlement, and identified 37,136 Bru migrants as eligible for the pact’s benefits.

The resettlement was originally due to be completed by 2022 but missed that timeline; as of the most recent published figures, only just over half of eligible migrants had received the benefits due to them. In June 2026, Tripura’s Minority Welfare Minister Sukla Charan Noatia met the Secretary of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs in New Delhi to press for faster implementation of Bru welfare schemes, part of continuing state-level efforts to move the process forward.

Displaced Bru families and advocacy groups have said progress on permanent housing and livelihood support remains uneven across resettlement sites, a recurring theme in coverage of the community’s situation even as officials describe the relationship between the state and the Bru community as a continuing priority.
