The Union Home Ministry has extended the Armed Forces Special Powers Act in designated “disturbed areas” of Manipur for a further six months, according to a notification issued this week. The extension covers most hill districts and several valley-adjacent zones, while a number of Imphal Valley assembly constituencies remain outside AFSPA’s jurisdiction, as has been the case in recent renewals.

The ministry’s notification cited continuing law and order concerns as the basis for the extension. Civil society groups in Manipur have long been divided on AFSPA, with some arguing it is necessary given the security situation and others calling for its repeal, citing past allegations of abuse under the law.

The extension will be reviewed again ahead of its expiry, officials said, based on the security assessment at that time.
