Manipuri Ras Lila, the centuries-old classical dance form depicting episodes from Krishna’s life, has continued to be performed in temples and community spaces across the valley even as the conflict has disrupted rehearsal schedules and, at times, forced smaller or relocated performances.

Dance gurus in Imphal said maintaining the tradition has taken on additional significance during the current crisis, describing performances as both a spiritual practice and an assertion of cultural continuity. Several troupes have adapted by holding rehearsals in members’ homes when community halls have been inaccessible.

Cultural preservation groups say Ras Lila, recognised by UNESCO as part of India’s intangible cultural heritage, remains one of the clearest expressions of Meitei Vaishnavite tradition, and its continuation through a difficult period has been a source of quiet pride for practitioners and audiences alike.
