Naga Peace Process Sees Renewed Push as Rio Leads Delhi Delegation

The long-running effort to reach a final settlement in the Naga peace process saw renewed high-level engagement in early 2026, with Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio leading a delegation to New Delhi to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, among other Union leaders, to press for a faster resolution.

On the Centre’s side, A.K. Mishra, Adviser to the Ministry of Home Affairs on Northeast Affairs, has continued talks with various Naga groups including the Isak-Muivah faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN-IM), which signed the original 2015 Framework Agreement with the Centre. Reports in early 2026 indicated the government was weighing whether to appoint a dedicated Minister of State for Home Affairs to help fast-track the stalled dialogue.

The talks have periodically strained: NSCN-IM statements expressing frustration with the pace of negotiations have not led the Centre to close the door on continued engagement, according to government sources, who describe New Delhi as still open to dialogue despite the friction.

The dispute’s core sticking points — a separate Naga flag and constitution — remain unresolved more than a decade after the framework agreement was signed, and the process continues to run in parallel with separate talks involving Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs).
