A 43-year-old Havildar with the Assam Police has handed India one of its most improbable results of the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Putul Sonowal, making his Games debut in the lawn bowls men’s singles, beat Canada’s Ryan Bester — the reigning world outdoor champion — in his opening sectional match in Glasgow on July 23.

The contest split into three acts. Sonowal took the first set 5-4, Bester hit back to win the second 7-3, and the match went to a tie-break, where the Assam bowler held his nerve to close it out. Bester is not a nominal favourite in these draws: he carries seven World Outdoor Championship medals in singles and pairs, a bronze from the 2006 Commonwealth Games, silver medals from 2014 and 2018, and a spot in the inaugural World Bowls Hall of Fame class of 2025. The Sports Authority of India called Sonowal’s win the best in the country’s Commonwealth Games history in the sport.

Sonowal’s path to Glasgow has been a slow build rather than a sudden arrival. He rose through domestic lawn bowls while serving with Assam Police, picking up a gold in the men’s triples and a bronze in the men’s singles at the National Games, and a Best Men’s Player award at the Inter-District Championships. International exposure came gradually too, including outings at the Lawn Bowls World Cup. The breakthrough arrived only this year, when he won gold in the men’s singles at the Asian Lawn Bowls Championships in New Delhi — the result that carried him into his first Commonwealth Games squad.

He now moves on to face Cecil Alexander of the Falkland Islands in his next sectional match. Elsewhere in the same event, the Indian women’s pair of Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh also won their tie-break opener against Malta and advance to face South Africa — a reminder that Northeast and Assam-linked bowlers have been central to India’s rise in a sport that rarely gets attention outside the Games.
