Assam Rifles, working with Mizoram’s civil authorities, ran two anti-narcotics operations in the state days apart this week, together recovering methamphetamine and heroin with a combined street value of more than ₹16 crore, according to a statement from the force’s Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (East).

In the first operation, conducted on July 24 in Aizawl’s Tuikhuahtlang locality, troops acting on specific intelligence intercepted a vehicle and recovered 1.97 kg of methamphetamine tablets concealed inside, valued at roughly ₹6.6 crore. Three people were apprehended in the joint operation, carried out alongside Aizawl Police and the state Excise and Narcotics Department. The seized contraband and the detainees were handed over to the narcotics department for further legal proceedings.

A day earlier, on July 23, a separate Assam Rifles team intercepted a Tata Intra V10 pick-up at Crossing Point-1 in Zokhawthar, a border town in Champhai district that sits directly on the Indo-Myanmar frontier. That operation recovered 1.227 kg of Heroin No. 4, with a street value estimated at ₹9.75 crore. The heroin and the vehicle were handed over to the Excise and Narcotics Department in Champhai.

Zokhawthar has long been one of the principal transit points for narcotics moving from Myanmar’s Sagaing and Chin regions into Mizoram and onward into India’s interior, and Assam Rifles units stationed along the border have reported a steady run of seizures there through the year. The force said it continues to maintain “a dual focus” — combating trafficking while running community outreach programmes in border districts.

The two hauls add to a run of similar operations across Mizoram and neighbouring Manipur in recent months, as security agencies have stepped up pressure on trafficking networks that route Myanmar-origin methamphetamine and heroin through the Northeast for distribution elsewhere in India.
