The governments of Assam and Manipur signed a memorandum of understanding this week aimed at coordinating support for Manipur residents who have relocated to Assam since the conflict began in 2023. The agreement covers access to temporary housing assistance, school enrolment for displaced children, and streamlined documentation support.

Officials from both states said thousands of Manipur residents, many of them Meitei families with relatives in Assam, have settled in Cachar and neighbouring districts over the past three years, straining local resources in some areas. The MoU is intended to formalise cost-sharing arrangements that have so far been handled informally.

A joint coordination cell will be based in Silchar, officials said, to serve as a single point of contact for displaced families seeking services across the two states.
