Continuous rain across Manipur’s hill districts has triggered a string of landslides along National Highway-37, the Imphal-Jiribam-Silchar corridor, leaving more than 500 trucks, fuel tankers and passenger vehicles stranded on both sides of the blocked stretches since Monday, July 20.

The worst damage lies between Awangkhul Part-I and Part-II in Noney district, where officials cited by regional outlets described a slide roughly 50 metres long and 35 metres high burying the carriageway in debris. A second slide, near Nungba Bazar in the Rongdai area, struck a day after road crews had cleared an earlier blockage on the same stretch — a sign of how unstable the slopes have become after two straight days of heavy rainfall in Noney and neighbouring Tamenglong district.

Authorities suspended security-escorted convoys on the highway and told transporters to stay off the route until debris clearance is complete and weather conditions improve. Engineers from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, alongside security personnel and contractor ABCI, have been working the affected sections with excavators and dumpers, though officials said continuing rain has slowed the pace of clearance.

The disruption lands at a difficult moment for Manipur’s supply lines. NH-37 is the state’s principal alternate route to the Barak Valley and onward into Assam; it has been choked just as NH-2, the Imphal-Dimapur highway, remains snarled by a separate, prolonged blockade — leaving the state reliant on whichever of its two major arteries happens to be passable on a given day.
