Mizoram Anti-Narcotics Operations Net Over Rs 34 Crore in Meth, Heroin in a Week

Law enforcement agencies in Mizoram seized methamphetamine and heroin worth more than Rs 34 crore combined in a string of anti-narcotics operations carried out across the state between July 17 and July 22, leading to at least nine arrests under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

The single largest haul came on July 21, when a joint team from the CID’s Special Branch and the Kolasib District Executive Force intercepted a vehicle on the national highway near Khamrang village in Kolasib district and recovered roughly 15 kg of suspected methamphetamine tablets, valued at an estimated Rs 12 crore. Four Kolasib residents were arrested, and a case has been registered at Kawnpui police station under the NDPS Act.

Aizawl saw two further seizures the same night. A CID (Special Branch) team intercepted a vehicle at Thuampui and recovered about 9 kg of methamphetamine worth an estimated Rs 7.2 crore, while officials said the week’s cumulative methamphetamine haul in the capital alone came to nearly 13.8 kg, worth roughly Rs 11 crore. Separately, a joint team from the Special Narcotics Police Station and the 34th Battalion of the Assam Rifles recovered a smaller quantity of heroin, around 21 grams, from a Khawzawl district resident living in Aizawl on July 22.

In Lunglei district, personnel from the district’s Special Branch and the 92nd Battalion of the Border Security Force recovered heroin packed into soap cases at Sethlun on the evening of July 21, arresting two people. A separate CID operation on July 17 had already seized close to 4.8 kg of methamphetamine worth an estimated Rs 3.8 crore from a restaurant in Aizawl’s Chanmari Kawn locality, leading to the arrest of three residents of Assam’s Karimganj district.

The seizures add to a pattern of narcotics trafficking that has repeatedly tied Mizoram’s border districts to smuggling routes running through Myanmar and neighbouring Manipur, with security agencies over the past year reporting periodic large hauls of both heroin and methamphetamine moving through the state.
